Just For Fun

June 22nd, 2010 by Mark Farrell

Every now and then at Tapshop we will no doubt put an amusing article together that is probably totally un related to our industry in the hope of keeping any readers we have interested and wondering when the next one will be.  Here is our first offering:

When it all goes wrong

My very clever mother always said that bad things happen in 3′s. With this idea in mind, when things start going wrong in the office, beware. All hell is set to break loose. When things start to go wrong in the office, it can be so frustrating, and it’s just sods law that whenever you really need something that will be the day it stops working.

Photocopiers are the really annoying things. Firstly, everything in the technological world tends to get smaller as time goes on. Not photocopiers though. They only seem to get larger and more obtrusive as time goes on. With this size comes inevitable hell should you ever find yourself placed with a jam. There are so many places for to paper to get stuck; it’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Surely it should be as simple as in and out. But now, instead the inside of a photocopier is more like a paper roller-coaster.

Another common function of the beast that is the photocopier is faxing. Faxing as a whole seems to be such an outdated process, however I do understand the benefits. What I do not understand is how they’ve managed to make a simple job of photocopying so difficult. I’ve heard of photo-fax mechanisms that require you to scan an item, send it to your desktop, type the number in from there, and then press fax. In these instances, I think the question that must be asked is ‘Ever heard of email?’

Printing is an essential in daily office life, but why is it that whenever you’ve got to print something on a deadline the ink decides to run out. Annoying as this is, it’s even more so when you’ve forgotten to re order the ink.

Lastly is the coffee machine. Installed in many office to make the coffee making process quicker meaning workers spend less time in the kitchen ‘waiting for the kettle to boil.’ The only problem with this is that they so frequently break down or run out of ingredients. In the past I’ve been presented with lattes minus the coffee and teas minus the water.

My answer to all of these problems is simple – simplicity. Give me a desktop scanner and printer, a separate little fax machine and a tub of instant coffee any day. Oh yeah, and don’t forget the ink!
