Eco Friendly Taps for Residential Households

July 20th, 2010 by Mark Farrell

So, all new homes need to be eco friendly within six years. The developers of course have to find suitable products that are tested to meet with the new government directive so eventually we might expect there to be hundreds of products on the market that can help us to help the environment. Eco friendly taps for todays residentials households, however, can be purchase through main household retailers and specialists, though just what to look out for can be simply daunting.

Of course there are plenty of other eco products that can be used around the home to help save money, and now most of use know which energy rating to look out for when selecting washing machines and other white goods which is great. But, additionally, carefully chosen accessories around households can help us cut the amount of electricity we are using and losing, and we want to concentrate on taps and how to look out for longer lasting energy saving ones.

Most of us Brits like a bath over a shower, though showers are hugely convenient they can use up just as much water, especially power showers. However, there are ways to cut down on usage of water even if you want to keep your bath/s. Mixer taps that come with a water break can help reduce the flow of water – how many times have you run a bath to return to it and find the bath is almost full and had to let the water out? This type of accessory, if considered carefully, can really help reduce the amount of wasted bath water by creating a slower flow and not filling the bath up too quickly, a great gadget to have.

There are taps that come with aerators that create tiny bubbles that mix with the water. These also reduce the flow of water but in a different way to mixer taps, though both are specifically designed for the same purpose.

We realise that specific design and form of taps when you are redesigning a room are all important. Should you buy taps that do not have a water saving facility, there are additional products, or cartridges, on the market that can be fixed to existing taps and promise to increase water saving and the equivalent usage of electricity associated with that (heating up the water, filling up the water tank after it has emptied etc).

By simply entering ‘water saving taps’ into Google UK, it becomes clear that there are many products out there right now that can help the environment and your pocket in the long term and eco friendly taps are becoming more popular, thanks to the Government initiative? We’re not sure just yet, but we know they will become more readily available and at reduced cost in the future so we can all do our bit to help. Buying Kitchen Taps

July 20th, 2010 by Mark Farrell

After consulting a plumber regarding your water pressure, you will be armed with knowledge on the types and models of tap that are suitable and can safely be fitted in your kitchen or bathroom for that matter. The next most important factor to consider when planning a new kitchen, or at least revamping the sink area, is how the new tap will be fitted.

There are three types of mounting available – deck (on the work surface), wall or sink – and its worth thinking about the amount of space around the sink you have and whether you are looking for a traditional or contemporary style. Most of the styles have options to work at low or high pressure, though consult assistance from the store you are buying from if this isn’t made obvious.

Wall Mounted Basin Taps
Where plenty of space is required, a sleek sharp wall mounted tap will allow for a sink to be fitted closer to the wall, if required, and will provide you with a fairly neat and tidy minimalist look. This type of mounted tap looks great and gives the impression and sense of space, however its pipes and connections will be hidden in the wall making it difficult to access should anything need maintenance in the future.

Deck Mounted Taps
Perhaps the most popular of kitchen fitted taps are those that are mounted onto the work surface next to the sink. Pillar taps are traditionally fitted on the deck because they need the space and usually have two parts which must be mounted, although this type of tap may not be suitable for sinks that have the holes already drilled. These taps have plenty of areas that need cleaning due to its two or three sections that are fitted on the worktop, perhaps not particularly useful for those kitchens with wooden work surfaces around the sink.

Sink Mounted Taps
Again, potentially a space saver any sink mounted taps need to be fairly tall to allow for washing of large dishes in the sink. Usually suitable for both low and high pressure water flow, they are largely available from designers and also to suit low budgets. These taps usually swivel 180 degrees and are fixed to one place where the movement allows water to flow over a double sink, or a sink and drainer – making it fairly easy to clean the area too.

Bathroom Trends and Recreating Sanctuaries

July 20th, 2010 by Mark Farrell

Plans to recreate spa and luxury surroundings in bathrooms are what the majority of us style followers are doing in our homes this year, with those that want to make more of a statement beginning to introduce vibrancy by way of strong colours like reds, blacks and purples. It may be those that are slightly more daring that introduce colour to what was previously all white and clinical on the approach to 2010, but for those a little less likely to choose those bold colours, sanctuaries can be created using simple sweeps of colour by adding the latest accessories to a bathroom packed with stone tiles and neutral colours.

Buying the smaller items and accessories for the bathroom is not exactly something most of us do regularly, so the decision over those products like taps and fixtures and fittings like towel rails and tissue holders is fairly difficult due to the sheer amount of things available on the market. For those of us attempting to follow todays trends, we might be opting for eco friendly accessories that use the latest technology to help both the environment and your pocket.

When buying smaller items like bathroom taps, it is still worth considering the style, the function and budget before making a purchase. Lever taps have been popular over the past five to ten years though even this trend is moving on slightly as we recreate luxury bathrooms in modern homes.

For modern taps in spa style bathrooms, dual lever taps are the norm. Classic styles can be obtained with the most wonderful crystal handles or spa type waterfall taps can be found that reproduce the smooth calm running water that may be associated with the calmness of a spa.

The materials in which the bathroom taps are made of should be a good consideration too. Where traditional style brass might once have been first choice, it is at risk of being overtaken by other materials like nickel and chrome, with stainless steel being the choice for a hard wearing and sturdy tap that can be found at very reasonable prices.

Considering the other accessories that will accompany your spa retreat will help create a great atmosphere with a sense of style and consistency – matching the tissue holder to the colour and style of the taps and towel rail really brings the whole look together. Whether it’s a minimalist luxury health club spa or traditional Mexican spa retreat you can achieve lots by thinking about the smaller things as much as, say, the wall tiles.

Advantage Of Using Mixer Taps

July 19th, 2010 by Mark Farrell

For many homes, the kitchen is the most important area of the home. This is where foods are prepared and also in todays world the kitchen diner is place to socialise. When you are entertaining you don’t want to be left alone in the kitchen doing all the cooking, so it is nice to have a kitchen where you can talk to your friends while you are preparing the food – and they can give you a hand in the process – which is an excellent advantage! When planning your new kitchen, you have to plan it to maximise its functionality and because you may be entertaining people there, you need it to look good too.

When first planning your kitchen, the overall design will be decided when doors, cupboards and white goods are selected (ovens, refrigerators etc). However, make sure that you spend as much time thinking and planning the smaller accessories, such as your sink and taps.

You may think that the cooker is the most important and well used area in the kitchen, but it fact it is the sink. It’s important in preparing your meals and also cleaning up afterwards so this area needs to be functional, sturdy and very easy to keep clean.

When looking for a tap for you kitchen sink, the best choice for those that do spend lots of time in the kitchen might be the mixer tap. A mixer tap has a single spout but has two separate water supplies, one for hot water and one for cold water. Mixer taps come as s a single lever mixer or dual control mixer, whichever you choose may be because you like the design, however a single lever with a pull out spray is hugely handy for rinsing dishes, the sink and the vegetables when you are preparing a meal.

Something else to consider is a mixer tap with a high spout – making it easy to wash large pots and pans. Also, if you plan to install or are already using a double-bowled sink, then choose a high spout mixer tap with 180 degrees swivel mechanism as this will give you the flexibility to use the tap over on both bowls.

It is important to think about the features when choosing a tap. Yes, the design is important too but functionality should come over form every time. Luckily, it is not a big problem to over come because there are so many kitchen taps on the market that make use of amazing technology as well as being perfectly formed.

Instant Boiling Water Taps

July 19th, 2010 by Mark Farrell

Taps have come on leaps and bounds in the last decade and are now far from just being a simple kitchen accessory that allows you to have water anytime you want. Taps can help a homeowner make a design statement and are available in many forms that meet varying standards of the most difficult to please. As well as coming in different finishes from the common shiny chrome to the elegant brushed stainless steel, they can make use of fascinating technology such as ceramic discs, or provide instant perfectly boiled water without having to change the boiler.

The latest innovation is the instant boiling water tap. It is currently threatening the existence of the ever-trusted traditional kettle. At present, there are only three or four manufacturers that offer the instant boiling/cold water tap but it will not be long before new brands will come onto the market.

So, what is makes the instant boiling water tap so special that it makes people covet it? Well, as its name suggests, it provides boiling water at a simple touch of a button or a pull of a lever and promises convenience at its best – no more filling the kettle, turning it on and waiting minutes for it to boil for your cup of tea.

As well as being a fantastic space saver, installing this kind of tap means that instant noodles and instant soup are exactly that – just turn the tap on and pour. The boiling water tap is also convenient for peeling potatoes, warming plates and sterilising bottles, which means no need to buy a bulky sterilizer when you are bottle-feeding your baby. It also saves time when cooking pasta, egg or anything that needs boiling water.

Instant boiling water taps have glowing features however, its main disadvantage is that it is very expensive compare to ordinary tap, even against a very up-market mixer tap. It also requires more electricity to run compare to the traditional kettle. Another point to make is that not all brands available promise water to be offered at boiling temperature so some aren’t great for making tea or sterilising although there are two main brands that promise instant boiling water in a tap.

Tapshop321 do not currently stock one of these taps but as we like to keep at the forefront of our industry we thought we would report on it as we may stock it in the future. Feel free to check out our extensive range of Bathroom Taps or Kitchen taps though as we have quite a nice selection.
